I was actually quite frustrated during episode 6, the point at which they were lining in order of presumed 'intelligence', a number of the contestants stating that "if you have a degree you're more intelligent".

I personally think its nonsense, having grown up alongside individuals that barely had IQ within double figures yet being accepted into Uni!!

I do accept that specific Uni's require a level of academic ability to actually 'get in' initially, but ultimately anyone can get a degree at an appropriate Uni!

Ash, we had to measure it on something - it was just meant to be a quick and easy benchmark to work it out. We did it academically because that was the only proof (if you can call it proof) available, otherwise it would have resulted in further arguments. I know loads of people who didnt go to Uni and they are far more intelligent than me so thats not the point we were making. Intelligence can mean so many different things so it wasn't as simple as it could have been and we had to define it in some way.

yeah i think having a degree doesn't mean you're more intelligent. I did go to uni, however i know there are a hell of a lot more people out there that are more intelligent then me, i think its naive to think they're not!
For me going to uni was partly because i didn't know what to do with my life, and partly because sixth form tutors never really gave you an option to do anything else!

This subject really rubs me up the wrong way. I didn't do well at school, due to to not being interested or what i wanted to do. Since leaving school i have done several different jobs and courses. I have done a NVQ level 3 in childcare which is equivillant of 3 a levels. Yes one day i would like to do a degree. However sometimes i dont see the point as i like the person i am now and the job i am in now.
Most of my friends have done a degree and have gone on to do other trainings to get themselves to where they want to be. I belive that we do things for a reason and to become better people, i do not class myself as any different from those people who have been to Uni to those who havent.

Hi Dan,

Fair do's although I think after living alongside each other for a period of time, you would surely have fit into some natural hierarchy, where the group is fully aware of who is more intelligent/informed than the next?

Regarding the Uni issue - this equally rubs me up the wrong way, I completed two A-Levels and planned a year out prior to considering Uni, during that year I was offered a job, a very good job which I accepted. Since then I have been headhunted 4 times and have just accepted a job with the Ministry of Defence's "Security and Defence" department. After being sought after so many times, I saw little point in returning to Uni!

I do accept however that a few specific occupations require a degree, and I actually believe that such courses contain very different content - A Law degree (and LPC) for instance contain specific and relevant content that you actually take into your career as a solicitor, too many degree's these days are designed simply to get you through the exams, but not designed to give you any useful information that you can take forward into the relevant career.

Eitherway, having not been to Uni personally - I drive a nice big car, own a 3 bedroom detached house with lots of equity and know very few WITH a degree that can say the same. In no shape or form am I less intelligent than someone that went to Uni, and as a 'soon to be' manager/employer within the MoD, I will be reviewing and prioritising CV's based on experience within real industry, not just Uni time or a posessing degree.

I went to university in leeds to study buisness management after 3 years study and several thousands pounds worth of debt, i dont even use my degree.

I currently like ash have a well paied job working for a leading insurance company, own a modest 2 bedroom house in a desirable area of halifax and drive 2 nice cars.

Personally i wish i had'nt gone to university i did'nt learn a great deal and spent 3 years basically doing naff all and getting my asignments done a few days before deadlines. Uni works for some people and i know a few friends that have done very well out of going but being academically brilliant these days doesnt improve your job prospects in the future and generally leaves a mountain of debut you spend years paying back.

Agreed, and to be fair a few careers DO require a degree to even get started, in which the degree's content is focused to actually providing you with a good base of information to take forward Law, Biology, Medicine etc.

Agreed Ash i have to older cousins who went to Oxford and Bristol respectivley to study Law & Vetinary Studies. Both requiring degrees, the biggest thing that annoys me about universities now is the amount of pointless degrees there are, I remember when i was choosing my uni there were degrees to be had in things like floristry no disrespect to any florists out there but surley it doesnt require a degree.

True, and with the greatest of respect to florists, very few would ever earn enough to pay off the cost of a £10k-£15k degree!!

Yes but in the main universties arnt selective enough when it comes to deciding on the courses they offer, more numbers means more money in terms of tuition fees, hall of residency ect ect.

Then again i've always though students were punished for bettering themselves due to the fact most are lumbered with debt up to there eyeballs.
