Shipwrecked Episode 1 - Sunday 1st February 2009

TV WRITEUP
The desert island reality series returns with twelve new contestants, two islands and 70,000 pounds prize money, which only one castway will win. Contestants must survive on basic rations, build camps from scratch, hunt and fish for food, and cope without supplies such as toilet paper. The first arrivals must find a way to cook their dinner without matches. On the other island, Hollie is having trouble coping with Rosie's relaxed attitude. The tribes are also greeted with a shock announcement.

Great first show! My thoughts on this year's Castaways:

The pair of new arrivals - superb. The lad seems alright too.

Tigers:
Liam - Stockton Strongman worried his celibacy would be tested by virgin Nadejah. Irresistible force meets immovable object. You decide who is which. Didn't flinch when deciding to roll the mouth of the Thames off Tiger island. A good start.

Sonny - at last, a proper bloke on the telly. Disappointed he hasn't thrown in any South-East Londonisms into conversation yet. Come on Sonny, give us a "don't be silly" or an "I'll leave you a write-off mate". Can't wait to see him up against Hollie on Tiger island, how will the feminist respond to his gender philosophies "women shouldn't want to be equal... that's a lack of ambition". Shaping up to be Shipwrecked classic already - well done casting crew!

Mark: Queen of the Incredulous, Mark could wake in the morning and see the sun come up over the horizon and he'd go into shock: "No way, oh my God I don't believe it" seems to be his repsonse to each island occurrence. Food being cooked over hot coals at a barbecue? "I don't believe it!"
New arrivals coming onto the island "Oh my God!"
Pope is Catholic: "No way!"

Hermione: every inch the Hermione, sensitive, intelligent and independent-minded lass ending up falling out with Nadejah. Maybe they had their differences?

Hollie: new 'sacrifice' transfer to the Tigers. A bit out of place on Shipwrecked, possibly chosen by accident as she has actually got a brain but doesn't have model looks. One of the strongest people on the islands but was a good choice of Xanthi's to leave, everyone else was more popular than her but hopefully she will be liked on Tigers'. A great swap with Nadejah as food is rationed on both islands.

Sharks
Xanthi: possibly named after the place he was conceived, must be glad his parents didn't honeymoon in Phuket or Lesbos. Seems to need a wooly hat and sunglasses simultaneously on a tropical island.

Mackenzie: said that if everybody else was struggling with the building or anything else he would step in to help. The result? Sharks spend a week sleeping under a sheet and some bits of wood in the kind of accomodation that makes Guantanamo Bay look like the Ritz.

Rosie: Despite being on an island surrounded with water, there's no chance of this girl drowning. If the two buoyancy aids she displays in her bikini top don't keep her afloat, I'm sure all the air inside her head would.

Soodi: A good start from the lustrous Londoner. Seems only to have packed her make up and bikinis, which is fine by me. Mighty fine.

Nadejah: The Mouth of the Thames. Is there anything good to say about this person? Yeah - she does a hilarious Hermione. The voluptuous virigin is who she is, yeah, and if I or anyone else doesn't like that, yeah, we can all just get on the plane and do one innit. Classic Nadejah quotes already, she says more than the two islands put together:
"I'm not an aggressive person - OK, I'm being aggressive now"
"Do you know me?"
"I don't jam with girls" (or boys)
"He gave it to me on a rod" (strange thing for a virgin to say)

She causes so much friction she should be put in charge of fire-starting. Seems to have a problem with authority, teamwork, sharing, patience, manners, peace & quiet, Hermione, boys, men, keeping her gob shut, pulling her weight, pulling anything, Sonny, Cher and possibly all known existing physical matter in the entire universe. Congratulations casting crew.

Great first show. I said I wouldn't get addicted to Shipwrecked but it's gone and happened all over again!

Wow what a first episode!  Both islanders getting 3 Shipwreckers each, one island 2 girls and 1 boy and the other island 2 boys and 1 girl. No matches to light fires with and very basic food rations.

First impressions of the initial 6 Shipwreckers I liked them all.  I was wondering when the other Shipwreckers would arrive and when they didn't arrive the first day I was thinking wow just 6 originals. The second day saw the rest of the originals arrive and the arrival of Nadejah on Tiger islands and straight away there was unease and an argument broke out amongst the tigers whilst on Shark island everyone was getting on really well, even though Hollie didn't feel like she fitted in straight away she felt like a shark once each tribe had found their identities and the game had begun.

The two tribes had to choose a leader, the leader then had to decide on island rules for their island. Sharks found out that they where hosting the first beach party and tided up ready for the big party. The sharks all dressed in Blue and really looked like they where a tribe and had all bonded well, however the tigers didn’t do the same and where comparing their island to the sharks and commented that their hut was coming along nicely. It wasn’t long until the mc meeting, where it was announced that each island would have to sacrifice a member of their own tribe to swop islands for four weeks. Both islands had mixed views on which it should be so it was left to the islands leaders to decide who it was. The sharks chose Hollie and the tigers chose Nadejah, which pleased one member of the tiger tribe, who had a great big smile on his face. Once both tribe members had swopped tribes there was a announcement that they could go and meet the new arrivals and both tribes met the two new arrivals.

This is where the speculation really starts; will both new arrivals have to choose independently or as a couple? Would there be a third island and will the island laws get out of hand? Will other members of both tribes put themselves up for nominations, will there be nominations at all?!

Favourite part of the episode - Mark "Will there be any toilet Roll?"
