Silkie, I'm just curious as to why you aren't a vegan?  If you are against animal cruelty and mistreatment, as I am, it's really the only way to go.  It takes a lot of work to be one though, it's amazing how many things have eggs and dairy products in them.

Hi coconut,

Funnily enough that's actually something I really gained out of Shipwrecked. It made me think about dairy, as we weren't really eating any. I always bought organic dairy and thought one day I'd have a garden where I'd keep animals and look after them and collect the produce, but living on Shipwrecked with loads of chickens was a reality check.

HOW ignorant was I not to know that chickens fly?!! On Shipwrecked I saw them living in the highest treetops, its beautiful. So the only way to collect eggs is to clip their wings and pen them. That idea doesn't agree with me, so we let them run free. Also, milk is meant for calves, not for humans. We basically starve the calves.

So coconut well done, I really respect your decision. I go through stages of cutting out diary, but I'm still not completely vegan. It's a lifestyle change that I'm going to work towards. In fact, I'm in Viva!s youth magazine this week, and was sent some info on being vegan following a chat with their editor. Life is a bit mad at the moment but i think when i calm down and start uni I'll find it much easier.

Just out of interest, what's your favourite source of protein? Vegetarians usually say cheese.. Vegans say..?

Thanks for the reply Silkie.  I'm glad you got something really valuable out of your Shipwrecked experience.  My favorite source of protein is chick peas.  I also like soy products and there are a ton of different beans too (kidney, red, lima ...).

I find it a healthier way of eating because you do have to be cautious about all processed foods because you don't know what's in them and so tend not to eat as much processed food.

I started off as a vegetarian because for one thing I loved ice cream Cheesy and I just thought that if I wasn't eating meat I wouldn't be contributing to the killing of animals until a vegan friend of mine opened my eyes about dairy cows, even from organic farms, and how the cows are continuously impregnated, the calfs are taken from them usually within 48 hours (most of the males are either killed right away or sold to veal farms) and they are generally confined and are usually sent to slaughter after their milk production is over. I read somewhere before that cows can live for up to 25 years but a diary cow has a life expectancy of only 5 years.

Sorry for the rambling sometimes when I start I can't stop.  But it really was shocking to me when I sat there eating my bowl of ice cream and was told I just killed a calf.  Shocked  It may have been a bit dramatic but it got me to read up on it anyway.

I'm really glad you were on the show and weren't afraid to speak your mind or give your opinions on the subject, which I know isn't always a popular or easy thing to do.  And you definately got people talking and thinking and I think that's a great thing.

Yeah i'd agree with that coconut about Silkie choosing to speak up on her feelings about the animals and give her opinions whilst on shipwrecked it can't have been a popular or easy thing to talk about ,but she was honest about her feelings and i think she did gain respect from the others for been so honest ,and i can't believe emma louise thinks pigs are ugly and smelly ,i think they are such sweet little things ,i can understand how silkie got attatched to them ,i guess we're all different though i just love all animals but i'm the opposite to emma i prefer pigs to chickens but i couldn't bring myself to kill any animal i'm far too squeamish i think i would faint if i watched it been done i'd have 2 swim 2 the pontoon until it was all over

it's pretty encouraging and a very pleasant surprise that a lot of people have been really supportive simply of the fact that i'm vocal about what i believe... that's cool in this day and age, because so many people feel intimidated by the majority, they rarely stop to consider their own thoughts. cheers!

just want to make it really clear that i am NOT vegetarian because:

- i see animals as pets
- i am emotionally attached to them
- i think they are cute
- i want to cuddle them

I AM vegetarian because..

- I morally object to killing
- I morally object to speciesism (see Animal Liberation by Peter Singer if you're interested!)

Hiya Silkie i think you'll be surprised just how much people do admire someone like yourself who does have strong opinions and isn't afraid to voice them ,the only way to gain respect is to be honest how you feel ,at least you wasn't trying to be anything that you wasn't and i agree about morally been against killing everyone human and animal has a right to live but unfortunately this is the world we live in i'm afraid
