Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands was first broadcast in January 2006 and shares little in common with the first series of Shipwrecked, but more in common with Survivor. While the earlier series were more of a Real World-style documentary without prizes or competition, this fourth series divided the competitors into two islands, who would compete for a prize of £70,000. The programme featured two teams, the Sharks and the Tigers, who live on the previously uninhabited Pacific islands of Motoraku and Rapota respectively (both are part of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands). The show was narrated by actor and voice-over artist, Craig Kelly of Queer as Folk (UK TV series) fame.

A new contestant arrives every week and spends half the week with one team and half the week with the other before deciding which team he or she would like to stay with. The team with the most members at the end of the show's five month run share the prize money.

Contestants are free to leave at any time and can also nominate themselves to change teams at the weekly beach party (generally the only time during the week when the Sharks and Tigers meet). If the other team votes to accept them they can then swap islands, if not they have to stay with their original team.

If two or more people put themselves forward for nomination from one island, then the rival island are only permitted to accept one nominee per week. Each island must have a minimum of 5 people at all times - nominations are only allowed if an island has six or more people. Contestants are only allowed two island moves during the series.

During the final week, the islands were equal with 14 inhabitants each, leaving the final new arrival Jenni Danns the hard decision of choosing which island would win. She eventually chose Shark Island, and the Sharks won the £70,000 prize. The show's editors highlighted attempts by the Tigers to persuade a Shark named Jo (whose brother had earlier quit the Shark tribe)to nominate herself to switch at the death (despite their refusal to accept her brother when he had attempted to switch). She decided to stay on Shark Island and it is doubtful she was ever interested in the idea.

The show was very successful, and many would suggest that the 2006 series was the most successful so far, probably surpassing the popularity originally expected from the producers. Many fans have called for a DVD as Shipwrecked was on once a week for 20 weeks on a Sunday afternoon. Much of the footage was edited, and clearly the public did not see everything that went on.

I have just watched 2006 again.  I only remembered the bare bones so when the contestants chose their island I couldn't remember precisely their choice. The first time I saw 2006, over the twenty weeks, I wanted the Tigers to win, possibly because they wanted to win with more desperation.

Having watched it over a few days Embarrassed I felt the Sharks definitely deserved to win. They attracted more people to their island and were able to keep them.

Starting out on the islands is very hard work and not an easy experience for both tribes. Sharks started out with strong minded, vocal people who didn't get on well. Geoff outcast himself and eventually nominated. He was not accepted by Tigers because two of them did not want him on their island.

One of them was Chris Baddu who went on to nominate himself to the Sharks for a short period. Chris himself expressed wanting to leave on occasion. He struck up and ended a relationship with an other member with the tribe causing that member to consider nominating.

Shark Kevin nominated himself to the Tigers for a short while. During his time there, Tigers kidnapped a Shark member. The Sharks invaded to rescue their Shark.

The punishment for both islands was a permanent swap.

It was a strange swap. Kevin who was originally a Shark (planning to return) was swapped for John who was an original Shark.

Even thought the rule break was instigated by Tigers, they were not punished apart from having to endure John on their island. Some Tigers also questioned wether John should receive a portion of Tigers winnings, he not wanting to be there, he therefore did not contribute to the Tiger cause. John was contributing to the Tigers win being a number against the Sharks and they winning the money.

I thought that was was poor. He should have received a prize either way, though in the whole scheme of the experience the money meant little to John, he just wanted Sharks to win the game.

Had the last contestant decided on the Tigers it would have morally resulted as a draw.

Sharks were winners they overcome many obstackles inter personality wise ie. James George became a valued member. He was out cast on the Tigers. Geoff outcast himself. He put himself up for nomination and was not accepted by two of the Tigers. He left the island later to be replaced by his sister who chose Sharks.

There were winners on Tiger island too. The builders Crawford and the other original who's name I forget. Crawford and Charlie (the posh one) who came over as very caring. Charlie on both islands.

Shipwrecked is a fantastic experience. The competition is entertainment for the viewers but essentially is a mar on the Islanders experience. But then the show is not about paradise. It's about people and how they react.

Having watched this again it seems that Shipwrecked 2009 draws much from 2006. The kidnappings, the island swapping. Though in 2009 the swapping is compulsory.
